Fifteen-year-old Raven Wishmore possesses a powerful magic that just might get her killed the ability to read things to life.

For years she has worked to keep her dangerous magic a secret, but the new assignment she’s been given by the clandestine society she belongs to—which is devoted to protecting magic worldwide—threatens to blow her cover. Raven is charged with locating a priceless cauldron hidden in the magical and infamous Saint Cloud Library while going undercover as a gum snapping, skirt wearing flake-of-a-girl. She finds her persona nearly impossible to keep as her teenage coworkers—in particular the twins Asher and Aron Montamos—do everything in their power to drive her away from the weakening library.

But Raven isn’t the only one searching for the cauldron. A group of magic abusers who twist magic to suit their dark desires are after the cauldron as well, and they’ll do anything to find it first.

If Raven wants to beat the magic abusers at their own game and save the library, she’ll have to trust her rocky relationship with Asher, Aron, and the rest of the Saint Cloud staff members. …If they don’t turn her in for possessing taboo magic, that is.

First off, I got the book for free during a promotional weekend.

If your biggest pet peeve is grammar and spelling mistakes then save yourself some time and frustration and do not download this book, EVER! If however, you still download the book after reading this review. You brought it upon yourself, so suck it up and don't post nasty reviews because you were warned!!!

Now to the actual story line behind the book... I thought it was actually very interesting. It was at times very reminiscent of one of my favorite mangas (Ouran High School Host Club) in that you had six pretty boys, two of which were isolated, mischievous twins, and one girl. Add in a love of books with copious references (quotes) to classics, a little bit of danger, the occasional allusion to Harry Potter, some quirky humor, and a highly overpowered heroine. It makes for an interesting read. Here comes the but... Several of the characters were left completely undeveloped, the peripheral characters had very little growth (if at all). The ending was also rather rushed. After getting through all the action, finally getting at least an outline of an explanation, and when you're on the verge of actually getting attached to the characters, it abruptly ends. Does this mean it was a bad story? No, it does not. I actually enjoyed the strange world within ours that the author created.

That being said back to the editing... Simply put there was none. If K. M. Shea has an editor, that person needs to be fired STAT! 'Life Reader' was riddled with errors so egregious that they could not be overlooked. For example here is an excerpt from the book
"Libraries were not sentinel beings. They had magic, yes but Saint Cloud reacted almost like an entity." That is verbatim from 'Life Reader' based on the context the word should have been sentient not sentinel. She also uses the word welded later on instead of wielded. But that is only the beginning of the errors. The author kept switching tenses which made things a bit harder to follow. Then what I consider to be a completely unforgivable mistake. K.M.Shea kept changing one character's name. He started out as Brannon but by the end of the book he was Brandon. Towards the end of the book there was one page alone where he started out Brandon was then called Brannon and then ended as Brandon again.

I wanted to love this book. I did not love it but I enjoyed wandering into a new and interesting world.
If you are looking for an engaging story and don't mind reading around a lot of errors. Then it's a unique read.
If you are the author and you are merely curious as to what people are saying about your book, PLEASE invest in a proof reader!!!

Life Reader eBook KM Shea Reviews

This book is a must-read! <3 It's a clean, enjoyable read with a neatly wrapped-up story arc and a promise for future adventures. Raven is a stellar lead with a good head on her shoulders (though I did want to shake her at one point), and you can tell that she knows what she's doing.

The world in which she operates is familiar to her - so, by extension, to us, by the time we're a few chapters in. I'll be honest my biggest complaint about this book was its learning curve. Kitty (the author, K.M. Shea) used quite a few terms at the beginning that I found difficult to grasp at first. However, it wasn't too long before I started to feel on par with Raven's familiarity, and the difficulty I had at the very beginning was well worth the payoff.

I adore the varied cast of characters Raven interacts with, from the director (heeheehee, this guy xD) to the twins (AHHH, THE TWINS! <3) to Raven's school friend (underrepresented, but if there's a sequel, I bet we'll see more of her). I would happily throttle perhaps two or three of the other characters - none of whom are villains, by the way, but all of whom are antagonistic in a way that makes me hold a grudge. xP Speaking of the villains, I'm actually really curious about Fox, and I think I'll leave it at that to avoid giving spoilers.

Oh, and the library itself is a character! Sort of. I mean, basically. I mean, I don't really have that part completely figured out, but I totally don't mind just going with it, especially given the additional information provided in bonus short stories on the author's website. ^_^

So there you have it - my two cents, whatever that will buy. xD The book is totally open for a sequel at some point, but it by no means ends on a cliffhanger. The plot points introduced at the very beginning of the novel are all resolved satisfactorily by the end. I have definitely fallen madly in love with the characters of this story and will revisit them again and again! <3
Okay, let me start off by saying that if you are too particular about grammar and spelling, you may be displeased with this book, as it lacks a lot of editing. However, I've found that the storyline itself is so engaging that it's easy to forgive and forget the errors. Kitty is a great author; I wouldn't let grammar and spelling mistakes distract me overly from the book itself. Even so I will take down a star.
Now back to the book. It was amazing, no doubt about it. You gotta hand it to Kitty; she is incredibly creative with these novels! Raven's ability is epic with an appropriate amount of backlash as a price. The characters are really fun-- although I really could do with more female page turners at Saint Cloud-- and so varied in personality. I especially enjoyed the troublemaker duo-- the twins were hilarious, what with Asher's adorable grumpiness and obvious affection for Raven and Aron's cheeky inputs and commentary. I was a little put out that they didn't find out her true identity until the end, and the use of the negative emotions was a little too intense, but overall it's a really good book and I highly recommend you check it out.
Try some other KM Shea books too; you won't regret it!
I love the world that K.M. Shea created with this book. The main character, Raven, can actually read characters, objects and scenes from books into real life. I mean, who wouldn't want a cool power like that? Her only issue is that she is only supposed to be able to create illusions. You will enjoy her adventure as she comes to terms with using her power and then ends up being a vital player in stopping the bad guys. The side characters add some humor to the story. I've read this one over and over again.
Other reviews may mention errors, but this book has been updated and I did not notice any obvious errors (and as a grammar nut, believe me, I would notice).
