Boxes WWII Historical Fiction Thriller Pietrowski Family Saga Book 1 eBook Jeanette Scales Reviews
Ms. Scales has written. Wonderful first novel. It grabbed my interest on the first page. Growing up at that time I never knew "Friends of a New Germany" existed. How a horrible incident affected the three children as adults and how they dealt with it makes a great story. This book has history, intrigue and even romance. Lookibg forward to her next novel.
I am not usually a fan of stories written in the first person but this one had me from the beginning. Although set in the World War II era, it is not primarily a war novel. It is suspenceful and characters were well developed. I had to smuggle the story in to work the morning after I started it because I could not wait to see how it ended. This was a complete surprise, especially from a first time author. Can't wait to see future books from her!
Fiction is not usually my area of interest, so when a friend recommended I read this book, I hesitated. Well, I loved it! It captured my attention immediately and I read the entire book in just two days! Because there were many historical facts and events mixed in with the vivid characters being brought to life through the author's words, I started to forget I was reading fiction. I hope there's a sequel in the works because I can't get enough of these characters!
A fast-paced intriguing plot pulled me along in this thriller. Like a fine Godiva chocolate, I had to ration my reading of this book each day as I didn't want this gem to end. Interesting background information on WWII German U-Boats which stalked merchant ships off New England. A Navy ship was sunk off Portland Maine towards the end of the war. As a 4 year old I watched my Merchant Marine father heading for his ship In NY as he was in the North Atlantic convoys. He came home.
I'm saving a space on the bookshelf for the next book by this author.
This is a great historical novel. I really enjoyed following the Pietrowski family and learned some interesting facts about the extensive German presence and activities in this country during the war. As a former history and English teacher for 30 years I was impressed with the extensive research the author has done and her writing style makes it easily to get right into the story and sail through it. I read the book in 2 days and if I was still teaching I would definitely assign this book to my history/English classes, both middle no high school would enjoy this story while learning many things.
I couldn't put this book down. It is truly a good read and suspenseful. I recommended it to my bookclub at the Senior Center and will recommend today at another book club. I wouldn't usually read a book with a lot of characters, but this is so well written you want to read about all of them. I can't wait until she writes another book. Great read for a first time author. Having lived during World War II, I found it so informative about the goings on right here in New England. I knew about the Japanese Intern cmps but never that the was sucha German presence here.
An excellent book. I couldn't put it down.
